UTEP Moot Trial Winners

Harmony Science Academy El Paso high school students participated in UTEP’s 3rd annual Law School Preparation Institute Moot Trial on April 28th 2012. This competition is a courtroom simulation that uses real cases being fought at the Supreme Court level and is judged by real practicing attorneys and district judges. The students were grilled by these judges on tough questions that challenged their positions. The students had to learn, not only the case material presented in the brief, but the discourse of a real lawyer--prefacing their statements with "Your honor," and "If it pleases the court." The students learned a lot about being a lawyer, but perhaps even more about confidently and professionally expressing their thoughts.'

'Our star of the day, S. Tapscott, took home the Best Advocate award both for the school and the overall competition. What this means is that she was awarded as the best attorney arguing for her case out of all the students at our school and of all the students from other schools at the competition. Sonia and Cessna also took home the 2nd place trophy from the Final Round of competition. Also competing were Jasio & Andrew, Alexis & Marcos, Alexis & Kassie, Carlos & Estephania, and Diana & Angela. Our younger competitors gained much experience and will come back fighting next year. Harmony will be excited to see which of our students will be defending our constitution at the highest level of our court system in the future.

Letter to Key Stakeholders Regarding The New York Times Article

Soner TarimFrom Superintendent Dr. Soner Tarim To the Harmony Public Schools Community: A disappointing article on charter schools in this week's New York Times attempts to put Harmony Public Schools in Texas in a context that is not accurate, necessitating this brief response. Many of us at Harmony Schools cooperated extensively with the Times on this story over the last several months, providing documents, interviews, tours and dozens of detailed responses to specific questions in good faith. But, as sometimes happens, the end result was not entirely what we had hoped. See the rest of Dr. Soner Tarim's response here: http://harmonytx.org/news/122/letter-to-stakeholders-on-ny-times-article/
